Chapter 5

Five

Confused and disoriented, I slowly open my eyes. Ada’s beating from yesterday should’ve left me sore and crippled, yet nothing is hurting. What could possibly explain this?

My gaze drops to the two gargantuan black wolves lying still on either side of me. They are both the size of a pony, and their faces look so content and peaceful that I’m baffled. They are acting like sharing a bed with me is the most natural thing in the world.

Mesmerized, I hesitantly place my hand on one huge wolf head. “Eric? I–is that you?” I whisper and then turn to look down at the other wolf. “Logan? W–what are you guys doing here? Why are you in my room?”

Eric is the first one to shape–shift back into a human, and I’m terrified when I realize my hand is now on his head. He slowly takes it down from there, and I shiver in my place. Once his eyes meet mine, he scowls, and I try my hardest not to check out his amazing physique. But it’s rather hard when his six–pack is just RIGHT THERE.

“We are here because we couldn’t let our slave get killed,” he mutters. “But don’t think we care about you on a personal level or something. This sure as hell doesn’t make us friends. You’re still a weakling.”

Logan has also shape–shifted back to a human, and while he isn’t as mean as Eric, he doesn’t look that friendly either. His eyes are cold, and his face is expressionless when he looks at me. It’s impossible to know what he is thinking.

Eventually, he speaks. “Eric is right. Letting you die from your injuries would be a huge waste,” he smirks at me and cocks his head when he notices my eyes looking him up and down. He is in prime shape as well, and I blush.

“A w–waste?” I stammer.

“That’s right,” Eric confirms. “You’re our slave–if you’re gone, who is going to clean our

shit?”

Oh my god, did he really say that?

I glare at the twins with tears prickling behind my eyelids. I can’t believe I thought they had changed for a second there. I’m so stupid… how am I so gullible?

For a hot minute, I believed the twins had saved me out of their own goodwill. I thought that maybe I was wrong about them and that there was something good in them. But no. They are still two evil bastards and nothing else. How did I ever think they could be more

than bullies?!

With tears in my eyes, I push myself up on shaky legs. I know the twins won’t leave my room even if I ask them to, which is why I intend to leave it myself. I head for the door…only to be stopped by Logan gripping my arm.

“Don’t mind, Eric,” he says in a soft tone, and, surprisingly enough, releases my arm. His face still doesn’t hold any emotion, but he does a whip of his head at his brother. “Come on. Let’s leave her alone. She obviously doesn’t want us inside her room.”

Eric looks like he is about to intervene, but Logan pulls him out of my room. What a relief. I let out a deep breath the moment they are gone and mind my own business.

A few days later, I’m finally enrolled in my new supernatural college. It seems like a great place to learn, and I’m happy during each and every seminar until the moment when there is a gym class. I don’t understand the need for it, but gym class is apparently important for supernatural creatures. I hate it because my clothes are ridiculous.

I’m wearing a large white T–shirt that the twins gave me, combined with a pair of shorts that are way too big. It looks like I escaped from kindergarten.

“I’m way too small for these clothes…” I tell my reflection while putting up my hair, and

that’s when Ada and her mean friends decide to interrupt the party.

“Oh, look! It’s the weakling that passed out after I gave her a light little beating,” Ada says while her friends are snickering behind her. She crosses her arms when I look at her and arches her eyebrows. “Careful, Five. You have a punchable face, and I bet the ball might end up hitting you if you aren’t careful enough. And this time, you might not survive.”

The girls snicker and leave me alone. But not without destroying my self–confidence first. I’m a mess when I head out on the field, and I’m more of a mess when the werewolf professor tells us to make teams of three. We are going to play volleyball since it’s the perfect way to train our reflexes for an actual battle, and my heart sinks. Who is going to

want to be on my team? This is horrible…

Ada lifts her nose high into the air. “Tori and Giselle will be on my team…” She looks at our professor. “Is it girls against girls and guys against guys?”

The professor arches a thick, black eyebrow and looks at Ada as if he believes her to be stupid. “Of course not, Miss Ada. Unlike humans, male werewolves aren’t necessarily stronger than females. Therefore, it doesn’t make sense to separate the teams by gender.”

I feel worse hearing that. It means I might be playing against the twins, and, as if reading my mind, the two of them wordlessly appear by my side. Logan looks bored while Eric is stretching his arms while glaring down at me. “You’re on our team,” he says. “Got a problem with that?”

Logan holds out his hand for me to take. “Nice to be working with you today.”

Okay, so maybe Logan isn’t that bad.

I shyly take his larger hand in mine. “Likewise.”

With his face deadly serious and not a smile in a miles radius Lazan —-

I snort out loud. I don’t know why I find Logan so funny. There is just something with him,

not even breaking into a smile that makes his spoken sentence hilarious, and when I laugh, the twins look at me with stunned expressions. It’s like they are shocked that I’m not crying shaking around them. As if they genuinely didn’t think I could smile.

The werewolf professor blows the whistle, and we are off to a flying start. Logan, Eric, and I gather on our side of the net, and we are facing Ada, Tori, and Giselle straight away. I’m nervous, but the twins are perfectly calm. It’s strange. Part of me wants to run away from them. They have bullied me and been mean, and I should dislike them, but part of me is curious about what this means. Why did they team with me?

“Have you ever played volleyball before?” Eric asks in a rough voice. He always sounds incredibly angry,

I shake my head. “N–no…”

Eric’s eyes narrow. I expect him to tell me to stay clear of his way, but he pats my shoulder. “Don’t worry, I got this. I will win this tournament for you.”

Uhhhh?

“Hey, you’re not the only one on the team. I’m excellent at sports, too,” Logan smirks

when I glance up at him, towering over me while cracking his shoulders. “Stay close to

me, Duchess, and I will keep the volleyball from hitting you square in the face.”

Duchess?

What the heck?

Why are they being so nice to me?!

I glance between the twins before my eyes fall on Ada. She is fuming, angry that the twins. are paying me attention. Suits her right. They might not like me, but at least they are

playing on my team today!

I grab the ball, feeling victorious already. “Let’s play.” My twin team stares at me, and since

I’m feeling a bit strange, I beam at them. “Afraid we are going to lose?”

“No,” Logan smirks. “We were just waiting for you to show us how it’s done.”

Eric comes up beside me, eyes focused on Ada. “Ready to lose, Ada?”

She smirks. “I won’t go down that easily!”

With that, our teams run toward the net and start to hit the ball back and forth at high

speed. Near me, I see Logan and Eric exchanging a look. My eyes flash between them over and over, watching their movements, watching how they hit the ball when it’s coming

towards them. It’s like they are a well–oiled machine. Chivalry! They do everything

together…almost as if they can read each other’s thoughts.

“Hit this!” Ada hits the ball quickly to Giselle. I swing out wildly, hitting air instead of the

ball. My heart stops when the ball flies over Giselle’s head and directly toward me.

Run! Run! I fly toward the ball, but it’s going to hit me in the face unless-

Right before it finally makes contact with my face, Eric passes the ball to Logan, who

throws it back as fast as he can to Eric, who finally sends it flying back over to Ada.

It was a perfect play, just one fluid motion, but instead of smiling at their skill and teamwork, I am focusing on my heart and how quickly it is beating in my chest. That was

too close! If Eric hadn’t been right beside me then-

“You all right?” Eric takes a step towards me.

“I’m fine…” I mumble.

He doesn’t look convinced and smirks. “Tell you what, if you manage to hit the ball once, I will give you a reward.”

“What kind of reward?” I ask in a low voice, and then, because I feel brave, I add, “Will you stop littering for a day? That would be a nice reward…”

Something resembling guilt flashes over Eric’s face, but I could be mistaken. His lips part and close repeatedly until he mutters, “Consider it done.”

I smile at him. “That’s a nice reward.”

He doesn’t look too happy. “Mhm…”
